Black Women Breastfeeding – Ashya’s Story

Today’s morning interview is with Ashya. Her persistence for breastfeeding through grad school, and nursing into toddlerhood are so inspiring. Make sure you get to her encouraging note at the end ❀

What has your breastfeeding journey been like?

I am a mom to two beautiful boys. A 6 year old whom I nursed for 22 months and a 5 month old that I currently nurse. My breastfeeding journey has been amazing. I love that I was/am able to provide nourishment to my boys.

Did the women in your family breastfeed?

My mother is the only woman in my family who nursed. She didn’t nurse me but she nursed my younger brother.

What made you want to breastfeed?

I believe that breast is best (nothing against formula fed babies. I was formula fed πŸ€—) so breastfeeding my boys was a given.

What is the biggest bf challenge you’ve overcome?

The biggest challenge I was faced with was an infant that wouldn’t take a bottle. My 6 year old refused BM bottles while I attended my graduate classes and internship. He would wait until I got home. I felt horrible but we both got through it.

Who are your biggest supporters?

My biggest supporter is my momma! She knows how strongly I feel about breastfeeding and she backs me up wholeheartedly

Tell us your favorite story about an experience with breastfeeding.

I interned at a preschool while I nursed my now 6 year old. One of the 4 year olds asked me if I fed my baby from my nickels. It was the cutest thing ever!

Is there anything else you’d like to share or encourage other moms?

Black mommas, stay strong and look for support. There will be plenty of people that tell you “just give that baby a bottle” If you want to nurse your baby, nurse! Don’t let anyone shame you. You are providing nourishment for your baby the way our bodies were designed to and it’s a beautiful thing.
